LD 1473 Explained

Why we oppose this legislation...

Large-scale, industrial fish-raising facilities are not farms, stables, cow barns, or potato storage buildings. They are factories or production operations as complex as paper mills or oil refineries. If our paper mills are not exempt from MUBEC requirements, then land-based aquaculture facilities should not be either. Operations like Whole Oceans, Nordic Aquaculture, and the other projects targeting Maine's resources are no more about "fish farming" than Bath Iron Works is about "blacksmithing." We need a comprehensive, regionally integrated permitting and monitoring program -- well-funded -- that promotes sustainable economic development AND restores the natural abundance and resilience of native species. LD 1473 won't get us there.
